28 Day Shoujo Challenge – Day 11

Tears. We all have seen them in Shoujo. Sometimes they are the big bubbly tears from Studio Ghibi films, other times it’s the single tear streak from betrayal, and other times it’s the tears that won’t stop as you hiccup and ugly cry all your feelings out. For today’s topic, “Shoujo That Made You Cry”; I had a hard time picking.

I’m not a crier. I’ve said that at least 12+ times on my blog, so most people think it’s fake. It’s true, I swear. I remember watching a movie with my friends where they were all bawling their eyes out because it was “so sad~” and I was dry eyed. Shoujo for me, I’ve always focused on the heart-pounding, they’re so cute kinda feelings over tears.

So I had to do some serious reflection on what shoujo anime, if any made me cry. I spent a lot of time and even rewatched some episodes to see if the tears came, or at least the memory of them. It took a bit, but I recalled. Oh boy did I recall to the point of wishing I hadn’t. The most tear inducing scenes of all of shoujo of course come from none other then….

Natsume Yuujinchou.

I don’t think it’s a surprise to say that actually. Natsume Yuujinchou has the special sort of magic, and I don’t mean via yokai, to really tug at the heartstrings. The situations are unique with the supernatural being involved and all, but the feelings are the same. The feeling of yearning from one to another despite species(?) barriers, craving acknowledgement from the person of interest, fearing and despairing in rejection, and of course the happy tears when your fears were unfounded and it all works out! There are so many episodes that moved me into tears in Natsume Yuujinchou that it’s hard to pin down anything more specific other then broad context.

Genuinely starting to tear up while writing and I think my thought is done, so I’ll end today here. I’ll see you tomorrow for something just as touching, but not quite tear inducing.

  1. I know what you mean!! Certain episodes on Natsume really hit you hard and you can’t help but get emotional. It’s such a wonderful anime because it pulls out every emotion from you throughout the course of the seasons.
    Great pick! 😊👍

  2. The shojo anime that can consistently make me cry is Fruits Basket (I’m referring to the original anime here, though I’ve certainly teared up during a few episodes of the new one). I frequently cry when watching Kisa’s episode or during the finale, but the one episode that never fails to get me is the one where they reveal Momiji’s past. It’s just so emotional and no matter what it always hits me just as much as it did the first time I watched it.

    • Fruits Basket (the Original too!) was on my list for series that makes me cry. Kisa’s original episode got me crying too. Same with Momiji’s… It’s such a touching series, thanks for sharing with me!
